Este místico diamante de 45,52 quilates parece de color azul a simple vista, pero bajo la luz ultravioleta obtiene un aspecto rojo fósforo.
Se cree que está maldito y que le trae mala suerte a quien lo posea. Dice la leyenda que fue robado de una estatua de Hindustán, y que, cuando los monjes se enteraron, lo maldijeron.
El diamante Hope tiene su origen en el diamante Tavernier Blue, de la mina Kollur, en Golconda, India. El diamante se caracterizaba por tener una forma triangular y un peso de 115 quilates (equivalente a 22,44 gramos). Su nombre se debe al comerciante francés Jean-Baptiste Tavernier, quien adquirió la gema entre los años 1660 y 1661.
Después de pasar por diferentes manos, en 1824, el diamante reapareció en el contexto histórico, al formar parte de la colección de gemas de Henry Phillip Hope. Tras su muerte, acaecida en el año 1839, la colección de gemas pasó a ser heredada por cada uno de los descendientes de la familia Hope.
En el año 1949, el comerciante estadounidense Harry Winston compró la joya.
Actualmente, puedes verlo (sin correr peligro) en el Smithsonian Museum of Natural History de Washington DC.
Su precio es de 250 millones de euros.

The damn diamond. The Hope Diamond
This 45.52 carat mystical diamond looks blue to the naked eye, but under ultraviolet light it gets a phosphor red appearance.
It is believed that it is cursed and that it brings bad luck to whoever owns it. Legend has it that he was robbed of a statue of Hindustan, and that, when the monks found out, they cursed it.
The Hope diamond originates from the Tavernier Blue diamond from the Kollur mine in Golconda, India.
